The Chinese car manufacturer BYD has just presented a new, super-powerful charging system. Tesla had already struck a major blow in this emerging market by offering 500 kW charging (allowing a Model Y to be fully charged in less than an hour), but these figures have just been ridiculed by BYD.

The Asian brand has just tested new generation charging stations, capable of generating up to 1500 kW. Far from being science fiction or a concept out of the hat of a few engineers, this super charger could quickly arrive on the market.

Recharge in just a few minutes

This is not the first time that BYD has talked about such fast charging. The firm had already mentioned a 1000V platform. Presented in March 2025, it allowed you to charge your electric car in just 5 minutes. By offering 50% faster charging, this time should drop below three minutes.

Technology Fast Charging developed by BYD would initially only be available on compatible cars. If China is obviously the manufacturer’s preferred market, it is also banking on Europe to find new customers quickly.

During the last edition of the Munich Motor Show, Stella Li, CEO of BYD Europe, assured that 200 to 300 stations should see the light of day in Europe before the end of the year. In a note from Deutsche Bank, the banking institution expects a massive investment from BYD, up to 3,000 stations would be financed in 2026.

Recharge faster, without risks?

This is the cornerstone of this project. Does recharging your electric car with such power present any risk for the vehicle and the user? With such intensity levels, the value generated by the load is considerable. BYD has also built charging guns with an integrated liquid cooling system.

In its statements made to the press, BYD aims to be reassuring. The brand ensures that it has taken sufficient measures, particularly on batteries. For several years they have had an optimized 1000V architecture, designed precisely to support these very powerful loads.

The last unknown would therefore be on the side of the electricity network. Delivering that much power in just a few minutes could have side effects on the grid as a whole. To avoid disrupting the network more than necessary, BYD deploys huge storage cabinets with its charging stations. Batteries that recharge on a conventional voltage, without endangering the electricity network, while offering enough energy to users of the charging station to be able to plug in their vehicle and benefit from ultra-fast charging.
