The upcoming iOS 26 upgrade will finally allow iPhone and iPad users to capture screen recordings in the highest resolution their devices can support.
Apple first enabled screen recordings on its portable devices in 2017 with iOS 11. However, the resolution was capped at a maximum of 1,920 pixels in either height or width, quite a bit below the maximum resolution offered by modern iPhones like the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which goes up to 1320 by 2868 pixels, or the 11th-generation iPad.
Apple Unveils Liquid Glass, a New Design Language
Now, 9to5Mac reports that screen recordings have been upgraded to record in full resolution, meaning much higher quality and professional recordings if you want to share what you capture at work or on social media. In addition, Apple seems to have been able to execute the upgrade without sucking up your spare storage with excessively large video files.
According to 9to5Mac, file sizes remained moderately similar despite the newly increased resolutions. A maximum resolution 12-second screen recording of the same content was only 5.3MB larger following the upgrade than on previous beta iterations of iOS 26.

It won’t be long until you’re able to try out the new feature for yourself. Though the launch date isn’t officially confirmed, iOS 26 is currently estimated to be released around Sept. 16 following the iPhone 17 launch, based on Apple’s previous product release cycles. And if you can’t wait that long, the new feature is available in the iOS 26 public beta. On your iPhone, head to Settings > General > Software Update and tap the Beta Updates option to enable.
There are plenty more features to look forward to in iOS 26, including an innovative “liquid glass” transparent visual effect, a redesigned Photos app, and new features to make snapping one-handed photos more intuitive.
