Apple’s iPhone Air is struggling to attract customers, and the company has planned to cut down its production significantly, multiple reports suggest.

The iPhone Air was launched as part of the iPhone 17 lineup last month, and its biggest USP is its thinness. Measuring 5.6mm at its thinnest edge, it’s the slimmest phone Apple has ever made. However, that hasn’t translated to positive sales numbers, forcing Apple to reconsider its production plans.

While the forecast for the overall lineup continues to be at 85 million to 90 million units, Apple has cut back on orders for the iPhone Air to nearly “end of production” levels due to weak demand, Nikkei Asia reports.

Initially, Apple had planned to allocate 10-15% of this year’s total iPhone production to the Air. However, starting next month, its production will be reduced by at least 10% compared to September levels, the report adds. A separate survey by KeyBanc Capital Markets found that there’s “virtually no demand for iPhone Air.”

Reports by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Japan’s Mizuho Securities paint a similar picture. Kuo says suppliers may reduce component shipments by 80% between now and the first quarter of 2026, while Mizuho Securities reports that Apple will produce one million fewer iPhone Air units than it had originally projected for this year.

The report arrives just a week after it was reported that Samsung is planning to cancel the Edge variant for its S26 series and halt production of the S25 Edge due to low demand.

Both phones have generated plenty of buzz on social media and received largely positive reviews from tech platforms, including PCMag. However, when it comes to using them as a daily driver, most customers seem to be uninterested

Sales for the rest of the iPhone 17 lineup, meanwhile, have been pretty solid. According to Counterpoint Research, the iPhone 17 series has outperformed the iPhone 16 series by 10% in the first 10 days of availability in the US and China.

The base iPhone 17 is the biggest winner, accounting for one-third of the total sales. The 17 Pro Max is also seeing a strong demand, while the iPhone Air has performed slightly better than the iPhone 16 Plus it replaced, the report adds.
