Report: Super version of Nvidia’s graphics cards depends on 3 GB chips

The Videocardz website has learned from a graphics card manufacturer that near-production copies of the long-awaited super series of Nvidia’s RTX 5000 series have arrived. These should be cards called 5080 Super, 5070 Ti Super and 5070 Super. What’s new here is the memory configuration with 50 percent more RAM per card. In order there should be 24, 24 and 18 GB of GDDR7 DRAM. The number of calculators will only change in the 5070; there will be 6400 instead of 6144 CUDA cores.

According to the report, Nvidia has instructed its so-called board partners not to bring the cards onto the market for the time being because the GDDR7 chips required for this with 3 instead of 2 GB of capacity are still too expensive. Nvidia wants to achieve the larger memory configuration without significantly changing the number of chips and thus the layout of the board and the width of the memory channels on the GPUs. The catch: One of the 3 GB DRAMs currently costs between 60 and 70 US dollars, a 3 GB chip should cost around 20 US dollars. For the eight components of a 5080 Super, the material costs would increase by at least $320. The reason is of course the ongoing storage crisis.

Nvidia usually brings a super series onto the market around a year after introducing a new GPU architecture for gaming graphics cards, but at least halfway through the planned lifespan of a generation. The RTX 5000 Super was initially expected for the end of 2025 – but then memory prices multiplied due to the AI hype. As a result, it was said that the super cards should no longer appear in 2026.

Nevertheless, it now appears as if Nvidia has not finally buried the project. If the reference designs are really ready and the only slightly revised Blackwell GPUs of the Super series can be produced in sufficient quantities, everything really depends on the memory price. Although the prices on the market for end customers have not increased further for months – the level is still so high that, given the lack of competition in the high-end from the RTX 5080 onwards, more expensive cards could hardly be worthwhile for the manufacturers.
