A few weeks ago, Logitech announced an interesting new keyboard case for the iPad Air and iPad Pro – called the Logitech Flip Folio. It takes a different approach, and certainly targets a new market that hasn’t quite been thought about before.

Overview

First things first, this keyboard does not utilize the smart connector – unlike other Logitech keyboards for iPad. However, as you’ll soon see – that’s an essential part of the product.

Unlike other iPad keyboards that force the keyboard and the iPad to be one unit, the Logitech Flip Folio allows you to pull the magnetic bluetooth keyboard aside, prop up your iPad on a table or whatnot – and start typing.

You are missing out on a trackpad here unfortunately, which many would consider a critical part of the iPad experience, but once you get past that fact, it’s actually a pretty neat concept.

The Logitech Flip Folio is two parts: a rigid folio case, and a magnetic bluetooth keyboard. The two pieces fit together nicely, and it isn’t incredibly bulky which is nice. The bluetooth keyboard also doesn’t need to be charged regularly, and instead utilizes CR2016 batteries – which get you up to two years of battery life under typical usage.

Verdict

I’ve had my review unit for a couple weeks now, and I’d say it’s a worthwhile purchase if you want an iPad keyboard that still allows for a lot of flexibility. With Apple’s Magic Keyboard, you’re essentially forced to keep your iPad and keyboard in this all-in-one laptop setup.

Sure, you can easily detach it, but then you lose the ability to type. Logitech Flip Folio opens the door to new possibilities for iPad usage.

Flip Folio also has a ton of magnets, allowing you to prop up your iPad in landscape orientation and place your phone next to it – for better productivity. Since the keyboard can pair to up to three devices, you could use the keyboard to type on your phone as well.

I’m a bit bummed in terms of limited iPad Pro compatibility. It only supports the M4 iPad Pro model, and you’re out of luck if you own an M1 or M2 iPad Pro, or even an 2018 or 2020 iPad Pro model. I’m not entirely sure why this is the case, since the keyboard is ultimately just bluetooth – but Logitech says older iPad Pros aren’t supported and I haven’t been able to test otherwise.

Wrap up & pricing

All in all, I’m really glad such a product exists. It does fall towards the higher end of the pricing spectrum for what it is, but it does ultimately undercut Apple’s Magic Keyboard by roughly 50% while delivering a distinctly new experience.

Logitech Flip Folio is available for $159.99 for 11-inch iPad models, and $179.99 for 13-inch iPad models. It’s compatible with M1, M2, and M3 iPad Air models, as well as M4 iPad Pro models.
