Samsung Offers Sneak Peek at Trifold Galaxy Z Phone With 10-Inch Screen

Samsung unofficially unveiled its trifold Galaxy Z smartphone at an event in Korea this week, giving us our first glimpse of the long-rumored device.

It opens up to a 10-inch screen when needed, and folds back into a rather chunky smartphone when not in use. At least that’s what an on-screen animation shows. No one actually saw it in action at the K-Tech showcase in South Korea. Instead, Samsung had two of the devices side by side behind glass, one folded and one open completely. A video clip superimposed on the glass then showed the device flipping between three form factors.

As Korean news outlet Dailian reports, this would be the first trifold phone from Samsung, following similar devices being trialled by Huawei. Samsung has experimented with various folding phone designs in the past, but double-hinged devices offer even more screen space, providing a truly transformative multi-function device. At least in theory.

Foldable phones and other devices often exhibit visual quirks around the hinge point, which can make them less desirable than single-screen devices, despite having extra display real estate to work with. The reporter who got up close with this device wasn’t able to see any kind of visual crease in the display, but it was behind a layer of glass with animations layered on top. It could be that Samsung has improved foldable screen technology, or that, in this case, it was showcasing a version of the trifold phone that had never been folded before.

Samsung didn’t provide any specs, though we can glean some details. There’s a front camera on the main screen, and another on the external display. When folded, the display is 6.5 inches, but it expands to 10 inches diagonally when fully unfolded.

There are rumors that Samsung will officially announce the phone this week. Showcasing it at any event certainly suggests it is close to release, and previous rumors suggested a 2025 launch. The Samsung XR mixed reality headset launch event came and went without a trifold debut, so we’ll have to wait and see.
