Samsung to hold Project Moohan Android XR headset event — here’s what we know

It feels like Samsung’s been working on Project Moohan for what seems forever at this point, but we’re not going to have to wait much longer for the mixed reality headset. Samsung just shared details about its next Galaxy event dubbed Worlds Wide Open, which is slated for Tuesday, October 21.

That’s when we expect to see the wraps taken off the Android XR powered headset that Samsung has been working on in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. While mixed reality experiences are expected to shape this headset, Samsung is betting on multimodal AI experiences to sell the power of what this headset is capable of doing.

This is actually a virtual event that will be streamed on Samsung’s website and YouTube channel, starting at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m PT on October 21. (In the UK, the event will be taking place on October 22 at 3 a.m. BST.) What’s strange about this all is the decision to hold this launch as a virtual event, instead of a live one much like Samsung’s past Galaxy Unpacked events this year for the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Edge, and Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Samsung has posted a teaser video for its Project Moohan event, and while the video doesn’t show off any hardware, it does simulate the experience of wearing the headset to demonstrate things like how it can overlay points of interest on a view of the real world, or call up stats and other details while you watch video.

Project Moohan is expected to go toe-to-toe against the Apple Vision Pro, but this product announcement could be overshadowed by something with a broader appeal — like an Android-powered version of Meta’s Ray-Ban smart sunglasses. Regardless, Samsung says that “Project Moohan blends everyday utility with immersive new experiences, unlocking a whole new dimension of possibility and setting a new benchmark for XR.”

There’s been a lot revealed about this headset. In fact, we had some hands-on time with the headset during Google I/O 2025 this past spring. We know that you control Project Moohan using hand gestures, such as a pinching motion to make selections and other gesture-based controls to scroll.

More of the hardware should be revealed at this event, like the display, which is rumored to use a pair of Sony 1.3-inch 4K OLED on Silicon panels. And just days ago, a specs leak indicated that Project Moohan is going to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 SoC. It’s also believed that Project Moohan will weigh 2 to 3 ounces less than Apple’s headset.

One of the biggest unknowns about Project Moohan is its price, which could be the one thing that could make or break the headset. Given the hefty cost of the Apple Vision Pro, Samsung could surprise all of us by undercutting its rival in this area. For those eager about this headset, Samsung’s offering a $100 credit for those who make a reservation right now.

It’s already been a busy year for Samsung, with three high-profile phone launches and now the Project Moohan event. And Samsung may not be done, as there’s a strong possibility that its rumored Galaxy Z Tri-Fold phone could debut before the end of 2025.
