For those looking to build a rackmount-ready server or workstation that can handle up to an SSI-EEB motherboard and capable of fitting a large liquid cooling setup, the RM4A is a new option from SilverStone that can fit up to a 360mm radiator while still fitting an SSI-EEB motherboard and up to eight expansion slots within 4U size constraints.

SilverStone RM4A contents

The SilverStone RM4A (SST-RM4A) is one of SilverStone’s newest 4U server chassis designs and this one is designed around being able to fit up to a 360mm radiator for water/liquid cooling while still being able to fit the largest server motherboards too and plenty of connectivity options. SilverStone recently sent over one of these RM4A enclosures and it’s been working out splendid.

SilverStone RM4A 4U chassis

Besides being able to accommodate a 360mm radiator right at the front of the chassis for optimal cooling, this 4U server chassis can also handle two 3.5-inch drives (or three 2.5-inch drives via the upper bracket) and four 2.5-inch drives, E-ATX / SSI-EEB / SSE-CEB motherboards, and full height expansion slots with eight expansion slots accessible.

SilverStone RM4A rear

Besides being able to accommodate three 120mm fans at the front of the chassis and enough space for up to a 360mm sized liquid cooling radiator, there are two 80mm exhaust fans at the rear of this 4U chassis. Or if foregoing a liquid cooling loop, there is support for up to a 137~148mm tall CPU heatsink depending upon whether or not the expansion card retainer is installed at the top of the chassis.

SilverStone RM4A front I/O ports

Front I/O ports on the SilverStone SST-RM4A include one USB Type-C and two USB 3.0 ports.

We don’t review many cases at Phoronix due to other focuses and not any Linux’ism to them, but it’s always a real treat checking out the latest SilverStone wares. SilverStone kindly sent over this review sample of the RM4A and it’s been working out very well. As we’ve enjoyed in testing out various SilverStone products over the past two decades plus, the RM4A is another one of their cases that is built extremely well.
