With the end ofHouse of the Dragon recorded at the end of its fourth season (unless there is a turnaround), HBO Max has its sights set on succession, in order to continue the legacy of Game of Thrones. It must be said that we are talking about the latest phenomenon series from a bygone era before the streaming wars, a time when you had to avoid colleagues on Monday morning if you had not seen the episode posted online at 2 a.m. the night before. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will never have this aura, just like House of the Dragon didn’t get it (sorry, it’s true). Let this not prevent him from finding the light, his light.

We are in -100 BC. AD, a hundred years before Jon Snow left for the Wallthat a Stark does not fall from a tower or lose his head. House Targaryen still controls Westeros, although the shadow of dragons no longer looms there. Long in the service of an old knight-errant, Ser Duncan the Great has taken over to try to make a name for himself at a local tournament. Dressed only in his courage and his honor, the somewhat naive knight will be helped in his ordeal by the young squire Egg. They will quickly encounter valuable allies and ruthless adversaries.
Let’s face it right away, we’re not the biggest fans of House of the Dragon. The series is a bit too GameofThronesque for us, with its heavy feeling of repetition made up of political conflicts, betrayals in castle corridors, inbred sleeping arrangements, even a credits in the form of copy and paste. Not to mention its ability to promise us a war that still has not seen the light of day (but season 3 should be the right one). Let’s say it right away, we are the biggest fans ofA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Game of Troll
With six episodes with an average duration of 35 minutesthe very format of the series intends to mark its difference from its predecessors. A format less conducive to long exposition scenes, closer to a sitcom rhythm. Which is not surprising since without playing on the field of pure comedy, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be able to slip into this category at the next Golden Globes, without tainting it.

The show directed by Ira Parker mania a kind of black humor, a sense of discrepancy and derision, even the absurdas if, far from the gravitas of power games, it was no longer forbidden to have fun in Westeros. Some moments are easy to laugh at, and the majority of the season takes place in a deliberately light, relaxed atmosphere. For connoisseurs, the style is quite close to a Chevalierworn by the late Heath Ledger. Although the issue will eventually catch up with the great History (readers know) of the continent, this first season finally brings us back to something simplein the muddy dirt of the countryside.
An environment in which you can rub shoulders with princes, lords, girls of joy, acrobats, with a kind of infectious innocence. One sequence in particular intends to play on our expectations, especially for anyone who remembers the Purple Wedding In Game of Thrones. Here too, it will be about a wedding, except that we will reward the character’s carelessness. As if the main issue remained to take the viewer off guard.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a fresh wind in Martin’s universe, a picturesque painting of a world seen from the bottom of the scale. Ira Parker even takes pleasure in touching on the sacred when the iconic credits of Game of Thrones begins to sound only to end with your pants down. A generic who loses his political attributes and will end up dressing in more heroic armor, as if, ultimately, he now resonated to tell us not dramas, but exploits.
The latest bromance?
It’s hard to say it any other way, we LOVE Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Great. The actor is perfect he imposes his stature, while being clumsy and friendly by nature. A physiognomy which allows him to stand out from the crowd and whose shyness and ignorance make him not very frightening to his peers. Whether he sets foot in a filthy inn or a castle, he constantly seems out of place. Which is pretty good since finding her is the whole point of the series.

And then it feels goodafter years of betrayals, hypocrisies or shenanigans, to see such a sweet character take center stage. “Dunk” only has his moral values and his inherited Knight’s code of honor going for him. The kind of protagonist who wouldn’t last an episode in Game of Thrones. We have here a real “nice guy” in the noble sense of the term and that adds a lot to the peaceful atmosphere of the show.
His duet with Dexter Sol Ansell, aka young Egg, demonstrates immediate alchemy and gives rise to an almost fraternal relationship between the two, each learning through contact with the other. The series has no use capitalizing for too long on the mystery surrounding Egg, to the point where Dexter Sol Ansell can quite quickly show another palette in his game, while remaining just as sincere.
“The Dunk effect” does not only work on Egg, but also on each of the characters who cross their path, both allies and adversaries, so that they all improve upon contact, causing an obvious attachment for all. Even if we have a favorite for Daniel Ings in Ser Lyonel.

And onceA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms imposed its mark, then Game of Thrones can regain some rights. Certain codes from the original series are present, without invading spacesuch as a dose of violence, court intrigue, and narcissistic Targaryens. The basics.

Little chance thatA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms become as popular as its predecessors, notably because it does not seem not have the same ambition, the same budget, the same storyline grandiloquence. However, you only need to spend five minutes in front of it to realize how much new and refreshing it has to offer. Another form of pleasure has just been born in Westeros and it feels good!
