Snapchat Is Adding Creator Subscriptions for Exclusive Content

Snapchat is following other social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube by allowing you to pay creators monthly for access to exclusive content and other benefits.

Subscriptions launch on Feb. 23 and will unlock exclusive Snaps or Stories on the platform, priority reply features to ensure your messages are highlighted to the creator, and an ad-free experience. It starts in an alpha phase with participating creators, including Harry Jowsey, Jeremiah Brown, and Skai Jackson, among others, although Snapchat has yet to share a full list.

Subscriptions will open to other creators at a later date, though Snap hasn’t specified when. It appears it’s prioritizing its Snap Stars community first, which are those it says “bring some of the best and most entertaining content.”

Every creator can set their own monthly prices within what Snapchat calls “recommended tiers.” That sounds like there may be an upper limit to prevent some from pricing too high. There are also plans to launch the features in Canada, France, and the UK in the “coming weeks.”

For the creators themselves, Snapchat says this offers a “sustainable source of revenue on top of existing monetization options.” For you, as a follower, it may mean you see less of the content you previously enjoyed, unless you subscribe and pay a monthly fee. However, many creators are using similar features across other platforms to gate select content, so it’s likely you’re missing out on some of their highlights if you don’t subscribe to one of their services.
