Rob Clark this week sent out the latest MSM DRM kernel driver updates for the latest Qualcomm display/graphics enhancements ahead of next month’s Linux 7.0 merge window.
While Linux 6.19 brought initial Adreno Gen 8 hardware support for the GPU with the Snapdragon X2 Elite and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, only with the Linux 7.0 kernel is the display support for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 now in place. With Linux 7.0 the MSM kernel driver will actually be able to drive displays in bettering the support for this latest-generation SoC.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, Linux 7.0 is also bringing support for the very old Adreno 225. The Adreno 225 is one of Qualcomm’s early Adreno designs following their acquisition of the ATI Imageon IP. The Adreno 225 is found in the old Snapdragon S4 Plus SoC and capable of OpenGL ES 2.0 and OpenGL 1.4.
The MSM driver updates for Linux 7.0 also include gamma correction support, UBWC support for the Adreno 840, and various fixes. The Universal Bandwidth Compression “UBWC” 6.0 support for Adreno 840 is an important improvement for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 “Kaanapali” beyond the display support.
