BOLIVAR, Mo. – Southwest Baptist University (SBU) has rebranded its data science program with a new bachelor’s degree explicitly focused on artificial intelligence, marking the school’s first bachelor’s degree in the field of AI.

The program, now called the Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, is designed to prepare students for high-growth careers that combine data analytics, machine learning and applied AI tools, according to a university news release.

“This program focuses on real-world skills that are highly relevant today,” says Dr. Amos Gichamba, division head and associate professor of computer engineering, said in the release. “Students will have the opportunity to solve industry challenges with AI and data-driven solutions.”

University officials said the change reflects shifts in both industry language and labor demand as artificial intelligence becomes a central part of data-related jobs.

A 2025 Brookings Institution report shows that AI-related job openings have grown at an average annual rate of 29% in recent years, including a sharp increase between 2024 and 2025.

The updated curriculum includes courses in artificial intelligence and machine learning, data-driven decision making and computer ethics. Students will also complete internships and work with real-world case studies as part of the program.

Dr. Troy Bethards, dean of SBU’s College of Professional Programs, said the degree reflects ongoing efforts to align academic programs with long-term workforce needs.

“We don’t just prepare students for their first job,” says Bethards. “We think about what skills they will need in five or ten years.”

Students in the program can also participate in SBU’s 4+1 option, which allows them to earn a bachelor’s degree while progressing toward a master’s degree in artificial intelligence or data science, completing both in five years.

University officials said the program has already attracted interest from incoming students for the fall class of 2026.
