Germany’s Sovereign Tech Fund / Sovereign Tech Agency has been a godsend the past few years for the open-source community. This funding from the German government has led to significant funding for dozens of prominent open-source infrastructure projects to provide more resources for enhancing security, enabling new features, and more. As the Sovereign Tech Fund prepares for the next phase of growth, they are hiring a new head to lead the efforts.

Over the past several years the Sovereign Tech Fund has made massive investments into projects like PHP and GNOME, supporting FFmpeg, and outside of Linux has also been investing in FreeBSD. They invested over $24M in two years into open-source. In addition to supporting projects themselves, the Sovereign Tech Fund has also experimented with funding open-source maintainers directly as well.

In today’s Sovereign Tech newsletter, they shared they are hiring a new head of the Sovereign Tech Fund as they prepare for a “pivotal phase of growth and scaling”:

“We’re hiring a new Head of the Sovereign Tech Fund. The Sovereign Tech Fund is the flagship program of the Sovereign Tech Agency. Since 2022, we’ve invested in critical open source infrastructure—from curl to FreeBSD to technologies like DNS that power the web—to strengthen digital sovereignty. Now we’re in a pivotal phase of growth and scaling, and we’re looking for an experienced leader for this key role.

You’ll lead a program with international impact, shape the future of open source sustainability, and help secure the infrastructure for a democratic digital future.”

They are hiring for a two-year term with a goal of it becoming an open-ended contract. Candidates should be fluent in both English and German.
