Spotify introduced new features earlier this month to let you share what you’re listening to right now, and teased that it was working on group chats. Surprisingly, that feature is now ready to go.

The messaging feature launched on Spotify in August as part of the app’s efforts to make it even more social. The app will now let you add up to nine other people to a chat, which it recommends using to “share the podcasts, playlists, and audiobooks you’re listening to.”

If you’re close with a group of music lovers, this may be the best way to share recommendations. However, 10 might not be enough to cultivate a music community. Instagram DMs support up to 250 participants, for example, while TikTok allows up to 32. Spotify is just getting started here, though, so it might expand in the future.

To start a group chat on Spotify, open the app and tap your profile, then select Messages. Press New message, and you’ll be given the option to set up a chat with others you’ve previously interacted with. If someone doesn’t appear, search for them to start a direct message, which will let you add them to another conversation. It only works on mobile for now, not desktop.

The feature is rolling out now, but it may take a while to appear for you on iOS or Android. Spotify’s announcement does suggest it’ll be ready for most people sooner rather than later.

That’s different from how it previously announced features, such as Listening activity, which is rolling out through February and allows you to automatically share recommendations to other Spotify contacts, who can select from six different emoji to express their own tastes.
