Ever switch between an audio and a physical copy of the same book? Spotify has a feature in development that may make it easier to pick up where you last left off.

Android Authority spotted a feature called Page Match hidden in the latest version of the Spotify app. It’s part of version 9.1.18.282, but it hasn’t been turned on yet, and it’s not clear where the feature is in its development process.

The code shows how Page Match will let you take a physical book or ebook, and scan the page you’re currently reading with your camera. Spotify will then take you to that moment in the audiobook, so you can listen to the same title on its service.

Spotify uses optical character recognition tech to do this. If it can’t read the page you’re scanning, the app may also recommend looking for another nearby page to try again.

Amazon has a similar feature for switching between Kindle books and Audible titles, but Spotify’s Page Match appears to take it one step further, allowing for all ebook platforms and physical books as well.

Android Authority also found a reference to the reverse of this feature in the code, with the app using the tagline “match your progress from the book page to the audiobook — and back again.”

The code suggests a button that may indicate your position in the audiobook and display the page number for your physical copy.

However, this feature may prove difficult for Spotify to develop. Sometimes books can change font sizes or spacing during the transition from hardback to paperback, or through special edition copies with extra elements like forewords. That may mean page numbers won’t always match across different versions.

Page Match remains hidden in Spotify’s code for now, and there’s no clear sign of when it may be heading for a public release. If it does, it’s likely to reach regions where audiobooks are available, including the US.

Spotify announced its latest price hike last week, with US listeners set to pay $12.99 a month from February. Its Duo and Family plans increase by $2 to $18.99 and $21.99 per month, respectively.
