The coalition task force set up after the start of the Iran war sees the supply situation in Germany as stable. “Security of supply is guaranteed,” said co-chairman Sepp Müller (CDU). The summer vacation is safe. The MPs discussed the current situation with representatives from the logistics industry, the chemical industry and the aviation industry, as co-chair Armand Zorn (SPD) said in Berlin. “At the moment we have no problem with security of supply,” said Zorn.

There have recently been concerns about a possible kerosene shortage. Zorn now said: “We have a price question, but not a quantity question.” But the situation is very dynamic. The aim is to ensure, for example in the chemical industry for helium, aluminum, sulfur or fertilizers, that the supply chains are secured in the long term.

No decision on a longer fuel discount

There is still no decision on a possible extension of the fuel discount beyond the end of June. Zorn had already expressed his negative opinion about it. Rather, a fuel price cap needs to be considered. However, Economics Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) rejects such a proposal. The reduction in the energy tax for fuels, which has been in effect since the beginning of May, is intended to reduce fuel prices by a total of 16.7 cents. According to the Monopolies Commission, the fuel discount is largely passed on at the pump.

Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) had said that the fuel discount seemed to be working: “And if there is no other way, I could imagine that we will have to discuss extending it.” This depends on the price situation. Müller said: “We are scouting and looking at the situation all the time.” It has currently been agreed that the fuel discount will expire on June 30th. “The situation will then show whether a further package of measures is required.

12 o’clock rule as a state matter

Regarding violations of the 12 o’clock price rule, Zorn said that the state authorities had a duty to ensure that applicable law was adhered to. According to an investigation, thousands of gas stations are not complying with the regulation. The rule has been in effect since April 1 and stipulates that gas stations can only raise prices once a day – at 12 noon. According to the law, violations can be punished with a fine of up to one hundred thousand euros.
