Tencent has closed its TiMi Montreal studio, marking another retrenchment in North America as development costs remain high, according to IGN. Founded in 2021 and led by former Assassin’s Creed creative director Ashraf Ismail, the studio was positioned as a AAA open-world, multi-platform game development center. Over its five years of operation, however, it did not release any standalone titles, contributing instead to projects such as Pokémon Unite and Call of Duty: Mobile.

Several former employees confirmed the closure online. Currently, Tencent did not respond to a request for comment. The shutdown may be linked to elevated development costs in North America. Tencent previously closed its Los Angeles-based studio in 2023, according to media reports, as part of broader adjustments to its overseas operations. [IGN]
