The UAE Cabinet, chaired by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, has approved the country’s official position on artificial intelligence (AI) policy internationally.

The policy, jointly developed by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of State for Advanced Science and Technology and the Office of the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Working Applications, represents a strategic step within the comprehensive framework for UAE foreign policy, designed to address the complex challenges of AI on the global stage.

The AI policy is based on six core principles: progress, collaboration, community, ethics, sustainability and safety, demonstrating a commitment to ensuring that AI development in the UAE is aligned with ethical, social and environmental priorities.

Furthermore, the policy aims to use AI to drive economic diversification and innovation, while encouraging the development of high-impact technological solutions.

The UAE’s position includes foreign policy on AI, including participation in international AI forums to shape the development and use of this technology through future standards and guidelines; advocating transparency and built-in checkpoints within AI tools, allowing governments to enforce ethical standards and implement accountability measures; and supporting the creation of international alliances to govern, secure and develop AI systems.

Additionally, supporting the creation of global alliances to govern, secure and advance AI systems; supporting the implementation of international regulations that hold countries responsible for the development of AI tools that could cause harm or destabilization, while ensuring AI safety, privacy protection and data security; and encouraging responsible use of AI applications through joint research and development initiatives aimed at promoting peace and stability, both regionally and globally.

Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Working Applications, emphasized that the UAE government plays a key role in shaping global AI governance frameworks and international policies by proactively contributing to multilateral platforms that focus on building an effective and responsible AI sector.

“The UAE has become a key player in the global governance of artificial intelligence, actively contributing to international policy discussions and helping to define the standards and frameworks that will shape the future of AI,” Al Olama said.

He added that this policy aims to strengthen the UAE’s global leadership in AI and ensure that technological progress goes hand in hand with improving the well-being of society.

Meanwhile, Omran Sharaf, Assistant Minister of State for Advanced Science and Technology, said that adopting such a policy would strengthen the UAE’s position as a leader in the development and use of AI, increasing confidence among its strategic partners .

Sharaf added: “By aligning the country’s foreign policy with global artificial intelligence standards, we are empowering local stakeholders, including private enterprises, research institutions and others, to tackle the challenges of artificial intelligence on an international scale .”
