He Minister council from last Tuesday, April 30 has given the green light to the Royal Decree who will take care of establish the regulation of the National Security Scheme in 5G Networks, as contemplated in the Royal Decree Law on 5G Cybersecurity. It is a regulation that describes the procedures, certifications and security schemes that telecommunications operators must carry out in order to comply with 5G cybersecurity risk management.
Telecommunications operators operating in Spain will have to take this regulation into account and comply with everything related to it. Especially in facilities considered of special importance for national security. These include mitigation measures and security diversification strategies.
In addition, the National 5G Network Security Scheme contemplates the creation of a 5G operations center, which will be a pioneer in the territory of the European Union. Its creation and implementation will be financed with 15 million euros of European funds from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR). It will be created in collaboration with the National Cryptological Center.
Among its functions will be the acquisition of 5G cybersecurity capabilities, as well as the supervision and guarantee that the security measures included in the National 5G Network Security Scheme are implemented.
The center will also be responsible for determine the level of criticality of the components of the 5G infrastructure, as well as developing improvement proposals focused on increasing monitoring and defense in 5G networks. At the same time, its members will be in charge of developing research and development (R&D) capabilities in terms of security. In addition, it will guarantee that the response capacity to cybersecurity incidents in 5G networks that may occur is appropriate in each case and situation.
