The Generalitat of Cataloniathrough its Digital Policies Secretariat of the Department of Business and Labor, has awarded a subsidy of €370,000 to the Atenea Project, within the framework of the Retech program, aimed at promoting innovation, ethics and society in the field of AI and financed with Next Generation EU funds.

This grant will allow Atenea AtDom to be developedthe evolution of Atenea towards the field of health and home care, with generative AI and new functions that will improve the quality of life of older people and facilitate the work of health professionals.

The launch of the project will be at the Smart City Expo congress in Barcelona (November 4-6), and will have the participation of Maria Galindo, Secretary of Digital Policies of the Generalitat of Catalonia.

Atenea AtDom will contribute to reducing hospital stays and healthcare pressure. It will incorporate innovations that transform the relationship between users and health services, in addition to maintaining all the current functions of Atenea, which makes it easier for older people to access digital services. Through a voice conversation with AI, seniors can make an appointment with their family doctor, establish a video call with a family member or call emergencies.

The first major improvement of Atenea AtDom will be the incorporation of Aina, an evolution of linguistic models that will allow us to go from a rigid dialogue to an open and empathetic conversation, thanks to generative AI based on Aina technology developed by the Generalitat of Catalonia.

In addition, the system will integrate Atenea Watch, a smart watch with sensors to monitor vital signs, detect falls or episodes of disorientation using GPS. Also to identify patterns of decompensation in the user’s health status.

If decompensation is identified, Atenea’s AI will talk to the patient to reassure and guide them. In addition, it will tell you guidelines to follow, such as sitting and waiting for the ambulance, while automatically notifying emergency services.

In addition, healthcare professionals will have an advanced clinical viewer, which will allow them to consult the status of patients in their homes in real time and access sensor data, trends, history, alerts and predictive models. In this way they can offer them more proactive and personalized attention.

This tool will improve medical decision-making and allow continuous monitoring of patients, which will reduce travel and contribute to more humane and technologically advanced medical care.

To validate this technology, a pilot will be carried out with 20 real patients from the home health care service of the Consorci Sanitari de l’Alt Penedès Garraf, with the active participation of health professionals and social integrators from the Welfare and Development Association (ABD). This pilot test will allow real data to be collected and the system to be adjusted to the specific needs of users and professionals. It will also ensure effective implementation adapted to the healthcare reality.

The Atenea AtDom project has the collaboration of the Foundation, the Alt-Penedès Garraf Health Consortium, ABD Welfare and Development Association, the Sant Feliu de Llobregat City Council and the Digital Policies Secretariat.

Atenea has received 2.3 million euros of financing from the Next Generation EU funds, managed by the Department of Social Rights and Inclusion, and has been developed through a co-creation process with more than 500 older people, users of the system. This process was carried out during the pilot test carried out between 2023 and 2024 in 20 Catalan municipalities, both in urban and rural environments. Among them, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Mataró, Mollet, Vic, Manlleu, Esplugues and the province of Lleida.

Albert Isern, CEO of Momentum Analytics and leader of the Atenea projecthas highlighted that «With Atenea AtDom we take another step in our mission of putting technology at the service of people, especially the most vulnerable, and this grant will allow us to move towards an intelligent, predictive and humane home care model.«.
