The iPhone Air might be proving a tough sell to customers

Apple’s sleek new iPhone Air may be struggling to find its crowd with new reports suggesting that Apple might cut its production by about one million units.

This comes from a report from South Korea’s The Elec (via Phone Arena), which suggests Apple is experiencing lower-than-expected demand for the handset. However, the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max units are all selling well – with Apple set to ramp up production there by two million, one million iPhone 17 Pros, and four million units respectively.

You can’t deny that the iPhone Air is a triumph – in fact, we gave it 4.5/5 stars due to its stunning design, great camera, and lovely ProMotion screen. But while the thinnest iPhone ever captured our hearts, its battery life has nothing compared to the other models.

It’s also missing the ultra-wide and telephoto lens found on other handsets. At nearly £1,000, that’s a much tougher sell – especially when you consider how well specced the other phones are.

The iPhone 17, for example, comes with the ProMotion display with a smooth 1-120Hz refresh rate and a beefy battery upgrade, which now boasts up to 30 hours. Given this handset startys at £799, this is a no brainer over the iPhone Air.

While cutting production certainly suggests the iPhone Air has been a failure, the overall result might not necessarily matter. Insiders have long been saying that the Air is just a testbed for Apple’s foldable concept – something that might see the light of day in 2027.
