The Italian company dedicated to the construction of data centers Mediterra DataCenters has announced the construction of a data center in the Barcelona area. It will be the first data center in Spain for this company, specialized in digital infrastructure in Southern Europe.

Mediterra has purchased a space in the industrial zone of Catalonia to build the data center, and has secured a 12 MW electrical connection for it. These are the first steps for the development of an infrastructure that will have 8 MW of installed IT capacity, occupying an area of around 9,700 square meters. If the planned deadlines are met, it will come into operation during the second half of 2027.

Mediterra’s Barcelona data center will be built with advanced technology, and will run on what they have called “100% green energy.” Your liquid cooling system will be closed circuit, unlike systems that lose large amounts of water through evaporation, and will use a refrigerant that is neither expelled nor replaced. In addition, its backup generators will be prepared to run on a fossil-free fuel, known as HVO100.

It will be built according to Mediterra’s reference design, which incorporates modular construction. This allows the integration of additional modules into the system as demand increases. In this way, energy consumption efficiency is improved, as well as rapid scalability. The facilities will also be designed to facilitate the recovery and exchange of waste heat with local utilities.

Mediterra thus lands in a market, the Spanish one, that is progressively gaining weight on the European map of data centers, like Southern Europe. The entire area is experiencing strong digital growth, thanks to demand for cloud services, AI and high-performance computing.

Emmanuel Becker, CEO of Mediterra DataCentershas commented on the operation that «Barcelona represents a natural step in our Mediterranean growth strategy. The Spanish digital economy is in full expansion, and the Catalan capital is increasingly establishing itself as a reference hub for AI and HPC workloads. “With this new facility, we bring Mediterra’s modular, high-efficiency design to a market that demands speed, reliability and sustainability, allowing customers to scale their operations from day one.”
