Launched in 2012 on PC, the Outlast video game series has become, over the years, one of the most impressive survival horror sagas. After two opuses acclaimed by critics and players, a stand-alone, as well as a multiplayer opus at the start of the year, we learn thatOutlast will have the right to its adaptation into a film on the big screen by the Lionsgate studio to whom we owe the films SAW.

We owe this exclusive information to the site Bloody Disgusting which announces that the Lionsgate studio has obtained the rights to adapt the Outlast video game series on the big screen. The development studio, Red Barrels, has thus reached an agreement with Lionsgate, which has already produced the license films SAW.

We already know that Roy Lee will be in charge of the adaptation. We already owe him many cult films like That, Late Night with the Devilor even Strange Darling. The objective will of course be to keep and transmit the soul and the terrifying atmosphere that we could discover in the games.

For the scenario, we find JT Petty who is already well involved in the story of the first two games. The latter returns to service for the film and explains: “Red Barrels has been pushing the boundaries of horror in games for over a decade, and expanding the Outlast universe to cinema is an incredible opportunity to dive deeper into the characters and killers we love”.

According to Roy Lee, video games Outlast already have all the codes to create a good horror film : “When Outlast was released in 2012, it changed the horror gaming landscape, setting a new standard for immersion in the genre. Its deep, emerging story provided a perfect foundation for creating a film that explores the psychological and physical horrors at the heart of the franchise. I’m excited to bring this unique world to life for new viewers and dedicated fans of the series.”.

Since 2012, Outlast seduced more than 37 million players across the world through two solo opuses (Outlast & Outlast II), a stand-alone (Outlast Whistleblower) and a multiplayer game (The Outlast Trials). It is certain that the arrival of a film could please many fans. Lionsgate’s expertise and Red Barrels’ involvement are very encouraging points. For now, no release window has been announced.
