Summary

  • Pixel 10 Pro Fold features durability upgrades like IP68 water and dust resistance, giving it an edge over competitors.
  • The new model offers minor improvements such as a gearless hinge and thinner bezels for a more standard smartphone feel.
  • Unique features like Instant View and Magic Cue enhance the user experience, while maintaining a similar camera setup as its predecessor.

Last year’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold was impressive, and this year, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold offers minor refinements, mostly on the durability and hinge front.

First, let’s talk about what’s new. There’s a revamped gearless hinge that Google says should feel smoother, while still remaining solid. In my brief hands-on time with the phone, I’d say that the hinge is slightly stiffer, but overall, it’s not that different from the Pixel 9 Pro’s foldable screen.

Other improvements include thinner bezels on the outer screen, which makes using the foldable’s 6.4-inch 1080 x 2364 pixel resolution OLED (408ppi) 60-120Hz Super Actua outer screen feel more like a standard smartphone when you’re holding it in your hand — this is something I immediately noticed as soon as I picked up the phone. I do this a lot with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and prefer to use it while folded most of the time, so I appreciate this subtle display improvement.

The outer display can also hit 3,000 nits, an increase from 2,700 nits of peak brightness. The brightness increase isn’t massive, but it is noticeable compared to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. On the inside, the foldable smartphone’s 2076 x 2152 pixel resolution OLED (373ppi) 1-120Hz display looks identical to last year’s, though Google claims the Super Actua Flex display’s ultra-thin glass is more resilient this year, ensuring it’ll better withstand drops. I only used the phone unfolded for a brief period, but the display looks great, though the crease is still pretty visible. You can also still see and feel it a bit more than the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s crease.

This year’s big change is durability

IP68 water and dust resistance offers extra peace of mind

Sticking with durability, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is also IP68 dust and water-resistant, a first in the foldable space, giving it a key advantage over the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 7, which are only IPX8. This means that the phone can handle a bit of water and dust, just like most modern smartphones. I’ve always been concerned about foldable durability, so this is a great move by Google.

Of course, just like the rest of the Pixel 10 lineup, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is compatible with PixelSnap Qi2 magnet accessories. This is long overdue, and it’s great to see an Android manufacturer finally embrace Qi2’s magnetic features. The foldable also features the same Tensor G5 chip as the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL. RAM remains at 16GB, with 256GB, 512GB, and new for this year, 1TB of storage.

The camera array is also the same on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, with a f/1.7 48-megapixel wide, a f/2.2 10.5-megapixel ultrawide, and a 10.8-megapixel telephoto shooter. The inner camera is still a f/2.2 10-megapixel, and the front camera remains a f/2.2 10-megapixel shooter. I was fine with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s camera performance, and given the Pixel 10 Pro Fold features the same specs, I expect it to be identical. Still, like with the Pixel 10 Pro, I can’t help but wish there were more upgrades.

More unique dual-screen features enter the fold

Magic Cue sounds like… magic (if it works)

In terms of features that take advantage of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s unique design, there’s a new Instant View feature I tried briefly that lets you see your photo as you capture it. Given my smartphone has slowly become my primary camera, I can see myself using this feature quite frequently. I also briefly watched a demo of one screen being used as a game controller with Asphalt Legends and Disney Speedstorm. This looks very cool and makes sense on a foldable, but it’s unclear how many developers will actually bring useful features like this to their games given the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s expensive price tag.

There are new AI features too, including Magic Cue, which utilizes Gemini to find what you want as you need it, and Camera Coach, which offers photo-snapping tips like better angles and lighting, just to name a few.

Magic Cue sort of sounds too good to be true, but watching it pull up a flight booking automatically within a text conversation about a trip is impressive. Like with the Pixel 9 series, I’ll need to try these AI features to figure out if they’re actually useful and, more importantly, reliable.

Beyond the durability improvements, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is pretty much the same foldable smartphone as last year. That means that if you already own the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, you aren’t missing out on much, but if you’ve been waiting to take the foldable plunge, the extra peace-of-mind IP68 water and dust resistance offers could mean it finally makes sense to pick one up, as long as you don’t mind the rather expensive price tag.

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold starts at $1,800/$2,400 CAD and is available in moonstone and jade on October 9, 2025. I’ll have more on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold in the coming weeks.
