Maps is one of Google’s flagship applications and the company has decided to offer it some new features. For spring, and while some already have their minds set on summer vacation, the application is becoming more efficient and enriched with new artificial intelligence tools. The Mountain View firm is not waiting for Google I/O to integrate generative AI into the operation of Maps. As we mentioned in February, research is changing and the AI will draw its information from the numerous contributions of users to gain precision.
Artificial intelligence is now able to analyze content, such as photos, to provide new information to the Internet user. Maps will be able to present the main characteristics of a place based on photos and reviews. For a restaurant, AI will be used to identify the name of a dish and display useful information based on the menu, such as its Price, popularity or whether it is vegetarian or vegan. The novelty can help abroad and avoids having to review all the opinions to find the right information.
AI, lists and a revamped interface
Google Maps is taking advantage of the arrival of AI to make some adjustments to its interface. No revolution on the part of the American giant which, however, is cleaning up the home screen, displaying fewer tabs than before. The app also adds new colors to pins to make it easier to find places on the map.
Like Pinterest, it becomes possible to create and share lists to better organize yourself when traveling or keep track of past trips. It is possible to organize them chronologically, like an itinerary. For fans of social networks, it is even possible to share your opinions from a list. These updates are coming to Android and iOS before the end of March.
One last promising idea, but only in North America
A final new feature allows you to obtain reliable recommendations from the best sites and the community. They will appear as lists, but only in certain cities in the United States and Canada. Maps will offer three categories to guide users in their choices:
- The 🔥“Trending” list: updated every week, it brings together places that have recently experienced a peak in popularity on Maps.
- The 🏆 “Top” list: it lists the places that the Maps community has always appreciated.
- The 💎 “Gems” list: it lists the places that could be considered a neighborhood’s best-kept secrets.
This latest novelty arrives in more than 40 cities in the United States and Canada starting this week. For the moment, Google is not talking about deployment in Europe.
