Artificial Intelligence is no longer just about answering questions or summarising content, it has started to take on actual work. From managing emails to scheduling meetings, the next generation of AI tools are actually performung real tasks. One such example is Comet, an AI-powered browser introduced by Perplexity AI. CEO Aravind Srinivas describes it not as just another chatbot, but as a digital co-worker.
In a recent podcast with The Verge, Srinivas said Comet is designed to perform full operational tasks like managing schedules, replying to emails, and even reaching out to job candidates. It’s currently in an invite-only phase and meant for premium users, but its capabilities already point toward some major workplace shifts.
Two Office Roles in the Firing Line
So, which jobs are most at risk? According to Srinivas, executive assistants and recruiters. Comet is integrated with apps like Google Calendar, Gmail, and LinkedIn. That means it can handle tasks like managing your calendar, preparing meetings, and dealing with emails. For recruiters, it can do even more—sourcing candidates, pulling contact info, sending follow-ups, updating spreadsheets, and providing pre-meeting summaries. All through a single prompt.
Srinivas didn’t sugarcoat it: he believes what takes a recruiter a week could now take one command with Comet.
Will AI Replace Jobs?
The comments from Srinivas echo a larger conversation in tech right now. While some leaders like Anthropic’s CEO predict that up to 50% of entry-level office roles could vanish, others see it differently. Nvidia’s CEO says AI has changed his job, but not taken it away. And Salesforce’s Marc Benioff believes AI should support workers, not replace them.
But what’s clear is that tools like Comet are blurring the line between human and machine tasks. Whether that leads to job losses or just a new way of working remains to be seen.
