More than a month after its discovery, the flaw allowing access to PSP games directly from PlayStation Portal has just been corrected. Last November, Sony put its new peripheral on sale allowing you to enjoy the PlayStation 5 remotely. In the form of a DualSense controller equipped with a screen, the PlayStation Portal is only used to perform Remote Play from a home console: an operation that was not to the taste of all players. However, this was not without counting on two engineers from Google who, in February 2024, managed to overcome the limitations of the small device.
Cloud vulnerability researcher Andy Nguyen and security engineer Calle Svenson revealed the fruit of their efforts on X (formerly Twitter) by publishing a photo of a PlayStation Portal capable of running Grand Theft Auto : Liberty City Stories.

After more than a month of hard work, PPSSPP is running natively on PlayStation Portal. Yes, we hacked it. With help from xyz and @ZetaTwo pic.twitter.com/AXuRROo6Ip

Nguyen then explained that this “hack” was entirely software and did not require any modification to the machine. Thanks to their talent, the two men managed to install the famous PPSSPP emulator to play PlayStation Portable games natively. In order to avoid any lawsuits, Andy Nguyen and Call Svenson never shared said method, and even ended up helping Sony correct the discovered flaw.
Streaming and that’s it
“We have been responsible and reported the issues to PlayStation. Bugs are fixed in version 2.06” declares Andy Nguyen in response to his tweet last February. Unfortunately for hackers who would have sought to achieve the same objective, the flaw is no longer. That’s not to say that there aren’t others, but Sony had to take all the necessary precautions to prevent the situation from happening again. Some users did not appreciate the brave gesture of the two engineers who ended up responding to clarify things.
“I don’t know why you’re crying about the reveal. If we had just revealed the flaw to the public, do you think Sony would have left the software unpatched? To prevent or not to prevent only represents a few weeks difference (on the application of the patch, Editor’s note).”
Back to square one for PlayStation Portal. But who knows, maybe the excitement behind a new portable console will motivate PlayStation to join the PC console race launched by the Steam Deck, the ROG Ally and other machines of the genre. To be continued.
