Phones these days have become so advanced in terms of camera technology that people now prefer taking photos on their phones rather than carrying a full-fledged camera. Google knows this and is working to improve the way we store and manage our photos. The Google Photos app has been receiving new features ranging from better multi-photo support to improved rotation tools. These updates consistently enhance the overall experience of the app and now, it looks like Google may be planning a major upgrade for the Photos app with the most loved feature: face recognition.

Right now, if you want to see which familiar faces are tagged in a photo, you typically have to swipe up or tap through to the photo details menu. But that might soon change. With the latest version of Google Photos, Google might be experimenting with a new layout that shows the faces on the main viewing screen.

This is great as you will be able to search all the images of a person by just tapping on their face. This also makes it easy for the user to add and update names of the faces with just a few taps.

It’s worth noting that this UI is still in progress. The feature seems a bit redundant at the moment, since the faces still show up on the details screen as well. Whether that’s an intentional design choice or just a placeholder for now, we’ll have to wait and see.

If this rolls out widely, it could really boost how we interact with our libraries — especially if you love sorting memories by people. For now, this change hasn’t gone live for everyone, but it’s definitely one to watch. And as always, we’ll be keeping a close eye for more updates from the Google Photos team.
