Google search results have long provided access to many associated services. The search giant did not hesitate to highlight certain in-house tools, starting with the very popular Google Maps. When you searched for an address or city, the search engine offered direct access to its mapping service. Practical, the shortcut suddenly disappeared in March with the entry into force of the DMA and European Internet users can no longer directly access this shortcut. The Digital Markets Act encompasses a series of measures aimed at combating anti-competitive practices in order to better protect European users.
Google Maps returns to Google search results
The good news for fans of Google services is that the function seems to be back. Our colleagues at 01net noted that the Maps button had made a comeback, at the top of the search engine results. “As part of our efforts to comply with the Digital Markets Regulation, we have made a number of changes to the way search results are displayed, including the removal of certain features. EU users will no longer see the “Maps” shortcut at the top of the search page »indicated a giant Mountain View spokesperson.
In order to offer this function again to its users, Google has modified its approach. Maps is now functional again in search results depending on the query submitted to the search engine. Therefore, it is still not possible to access it by searching for a specific address. However, a clickable Maps preview is available by searching for the name of a city. It is possible to zoom in and even launch a route from the page.
A discreet return, but necessarily practical for users of Maps and the Google search engine. From the DMA, you had to manually go to Google Maps to carry out a search of this type. At the time of this writing, it is not clear what prompted Google to change this function. Flaw in DMA or new function? The mystery remains and we will update this article if there is a response from Google.
