Trend reversal in the AI job crisis: US companies are hiring again

Amazon, Meta, Microsoft or Oracle are just the tip of the iceberg. A number of large tech companies have announced that they will cut thousands of jobs in 2026. And in many cases the justification was that the hype around AI was partly to blame.

Companies are hiring – even beginners

US companies have also held back on hiring in recent months. Entry-level jobs are considered particularly at risk when it comes to the AI job crisis. A report from the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) could encourage those involved and observers on this point. Because this means that the first companies in the USA are hiring new employees again.

The Google Group Alphabet is said to have expressed corresponding plans to investors. According to CFO Anat Ashkenazi, the tech group wants to hire employees in areas such as AI and cloud computing.

Bring back laid-off employees

Other companies are said to have come to the conclusion that AI is too expensive and has not met expectations of being able to replace human employees on a large scale. While some companies are adding new jobs, others are looking to bring back those who were recently laid off, according to the WSJ.

Career starters are also apparently in demand again. According to Sarah Franklin, CEO of HR platform Lattice, employers have recognized that people are still needed to work with AI. Anyone who uses AI agents in sales also needs sales employees, says Franklin.

AI skills and lower salary

According to the expert, the need for employees for junior positions is enormous. Because they not only have AI knowledge, but are also innovative, open-minded – and cheaper.

Your new job? You should keep an eye on these 5 careers of the future

The effects of the current trend reversal on the labor market are already being noticed. The number of layoffs in the US is shrinking. Currently, according to the WSJ, applications for unemployment benefits are at their lowest level since 1969. Demand for new workers is increasing.

AI brings uncertainty for employers

But it is unclear whether the new hiring phase is sustainable, as Paul Osterman, professor emeritus at MIT, warns. At the moment, no company really has a clue. “AI brings so much uncertainty for employers because they don’t know what they need and what they don’t,” says Osterman.
