The UK Digital Twin Centre has opened in Belfast in a major boost to the tech ecosystem of the Northern Irish capital.
The centre, delivered by Digital Catapult and financed by the Belfast Region City Deal and Innovate UK, will support the adoption of digital twin technologies with testing facilities, upskilling and use case development.
Digital Catapult has projected the adoption of digital twin technology across the UK’s critical sectors to add as much as £62m to the economy over the next decade.
The centre is also expected to support a flurry of new high-skilled tech jobs in Northern Ireland and provide local businesses with access to advanced technology.
“The UK Digital Twin Centre marks a major step for Belfast, driving innovation in high-growth sectors like advanced manufacturing,” said the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Micky Murray.
“Through the Belfast Region City Deal and with Digital Catapult’s UK-wide reach, we’re connecting our SMEs to a powerful network, unlocking access to new markets, collaboration opportunities, and cutting-edge technologies.”
A digital twin is a virtual representation of a physical asset or process. By creating a digital replica of, for example, machinery in a factory, businesses can monitor its condition and safely test process changes.
Among the centre’s projects is a six-month accelerator programme to support partnerships between startups and established industry, fast-tracking digital twin adoption in aerospace, maritime and defence.
“The UK Digital Twin Centre brings together our technical expertise, facilities, and networks to unlock the power of deep technologies,’ said Susan Bowen, chief executive of Digital Catapult.
“By connecting industries with cutting-edge technology through our programmes, we are enabling businesses to harness the full potential of digital twins-driving operational efficiencies, advancing sustainability, and sharpening the competitive edge of UK businesses.”
Digital Catapult initiative is a deep tech organisation that parners with businesses and governments to grow tech businesses.
The group last year launched a sustainability accelerator in partnership with Northern Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.
