At the start of the year developers behind the Budgie desktop environment hoped for shipping Budgie 10.10 in Q1-2025. We are now in Q4 without a stable release but at long last a preview version is at least available. Budgie 10.10 is the point at which Budgie is going all-in on Wayland in leaving behind the X11 desktop session support.
Budgie 10.10 is the last planned version before shifting to the Budgie 11 desktop. While running around one year behind schedule from their prior plans, Budgie 10.10 Preview 1 did ship this afternoon.
As noted in the 10.10-preview.1 announcement, Budgie 10.10 is indeed only supporting Wayland. Budgie is the desktop that was born out of the Solus Linux project and has since worked its way into various other Linux distribution package repositories too.
Those wanting to build Budgie 10.10 Preview 1 and try it out can do so via GitHub. As part of the Budgie 10.10 Preview is also the Budgie Session 1.0 preview release, Budgie Desktop Services 0.0.1, and Budgie Display Configurator 0.0.1.
