Apple’s long-promised next-generation CarPlay automotive system is finally ready to roll out, but you’ll need to be a high roller to take it for a spin.

The new infotainment system, first announced in 2022, offers much deeper integration with the car’s vital systems. However, it will be available only on Aston Martin vehicles initially.

Let’s have a look at what you can expect from the new update that promises to deliver the “best of the iPhone and the best of the car.”

What makes CarPlay Ultra different?

Currently, CarPlay just occupies one screen in the vehicle, the main centre console display. CarPlay Ultra commandeers every screen in the car, including the instrument panel. So that means deeper integration with the car’s systems on things like speed, gas mileage, remaining fuel, lights, tire pressures and more.

Cards for apps like Apple Maps and Apple Music (including cover art) can also appear within the screen directly behind the wheel, ensuring drivers don’t have to divert their eyes.

“CarPlay Ultra provides content for all the driver’s screens, including the instrument cluster, with dynamic and beautiful options for the speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge, and more, bringing a consistent look and feel to the entire driving experience,” Apple says in a Newsroom post. “Drivers can choose to show information from their iPhone, like maps and media, along with information that comes from the car, such as advanced driver assistance systems and tire pressure, right in the instrument cluster.”

A unique design for every automaker

Automakers can also customise the design to ensure their own unique look and style is maintained, whereas the current CarPlay offers a unified look. Drivers can choose instrument cluster themes, themes and colours too.

Apple adds: “CarPlay Ultra allows automakers to express their distinct design philosophy with the look and feel their customers expect.”

Apple has worked directly with Aston Martin on this and will work with other manufacturers too, so it’ll be a rather unique experience depending on which manufacturer you belt-up with.

When is CarPlay Ultra coming to my car?

Drivers in the United States and Canada whipping about in 007’s favourite form of transport will be receiving a software update in the weeks to come.

No news yet on when Brits in Aston Martin’s homeland will receive the update. However, Apple says to expect it globally within the next 12 months. It was originally expected with iOS 16, but better late than never!

Apple says: “Many other automakers around the world are working to bring CarPlay Ultra to drivers, including newly committed brands Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis.”

You won’t need one of the best iPhones to connect it to the car either with Apple promising compatibility with the iPhone 12 or newer.
