WhatsApp Web is getting some big new features (finally)

WhatsApp is finally rolling out voice and video calling on the web.

The first phase supports one-to-one chats for beta users, allowing them to place calls directly from their browser without installing the desktop app. This marks a major upgrade for WhatsApp Web, which previously only supported messaging and media sharing.

Desktop apps for Windows and Mac have supported calls since 2017. Web users, however, waited years for parity. After nearly a year of development, Meta is now delivering native calling support in browsers.

Calls made from WhatsApp Web are end‑to‑end encrypted using the Signal protocol. Only participants can hear the conversation, ensuring privacy. Encryption applies automatically, with no settings required. This matches protections already available on mobile and desktop apps.

WhatsApp is also adding screen sharing. During video calls, users can share their screen in real time. This feature mirrors desktop functionality, making it easier to present documents, slides, or other content directly from the browser. WhatsApp advises caution, reminding users to share only with trusted contacts.

Linux users benefit most. WhatsApp does not offer a desktop app for Linux, so web calling fills the gap. These users can now enjoy full functionality, including calls, without switching to their phone. Windows users who avoid the hybrid desktop app also gain new flexibility.

However, group calling remains in development. Reports suggest support for up to 32 participants, plus call links and scheduled calls. WhatsApp is testing stability before releasing the feature publicly. Once complete, the web client will offer a full calling experience, matching mobile and desktop.

It’s important to take note that availability remains limited. As of this current moment, voice and video calling are only confined to beta testers, with wider rollout planned in the coming weeks. Meta will expand eventually, ensuring performance and reliability before opening access to all users.
