No, this is not a total disappearance, but a targeted measure: the Bank of Spain has announced that it would withdraw from circulation from 50 euros damaged, in particular those stained by the safety devices integrated in automatic distributors or funds for transport.

Stacked tickets = suspicious tickets

Above all, this initiative aims to combat the circulation of potentially stolen tickets. During an attempted theft, some distributors or transport cases inject indelible ink into the tickets in order to mark them. These tasks, clearly visible, are a clear signal for the authorities: the ticket could be stolen. It is precisely this type of cut that the Spanish authorities now refuse to recognize as valid.

« Tickets stained by safety ink are not accepted as a means of payment, as they are presumed stolen Remember the Spanish bank. However, holders of such tickets can present them in a branch of the Central Bank, possibly accompanied by proof proving their legitimate origin.

A widespread alert

The news, relayed on certain social sites and networks with alarming titles, sowed doubt: will the 50 euros tickets all disappear? The answer is no. The orange ticket with the effigy of Europe, a figure of Greek mythology, remains perfectly valid as long as it is in good condition. No change is planned on a European scale.

And in France? Nothing new, but vigilance required

In France too, tickets stained by safety ink are regularly refused, because it is considered stolen. If an individual finds himself in possession of a marked ticket, he can go to a branch of the Banque de France to request an exchange. But beware: the exchange is not guaranteed, especially if the origin of the ticket is doubtful or if the marking is characteristic of an anti -theft device.

The Banque de France’s official website specifies that ” If a ticket has traces of safety ink, it must be presented to expertise. If in doubt about the origin, an investigation can be opened. »

A useful reminder for vacationers and traders

The Spanish decision is also a useful reminder for travelers who are preparing to use on vacation species: it is better to check the condition of its tickets before leaving. Merchants are also invited to redouble vigilance.

Finally, this measure once again shows the desire of central banks to further secure the circulation of species, at a time when electronic payments continue to gain ground.
