The wlroots library used by the Sway compositor and other Wayland compositors has merged support for the color-management-v1 protocol that is notable for enabling High Dynamic Range (HDR) display use under Linux.

Back in February the five-year-old Wayland color management protocol was merged into upstream Wayland Protocols. Since then there’s been a quick uptick in compositors and other client code embracing this protocol for working toward making 2025 the year of the HDR Linux desktop. Merged yesterday to the wlroots library was support for this protocol.

This merge request opened by Simon Ser two months ago landed for that color-management-v1 integration.

Given the popularity of not only Sway but others like Wayfire, Labwc, Cage, and others leveraging wlroots, it’s great seeing this support merged.
