Although it may not feel like that long ago Android 12 first launched, its time has officially come to an end.

Google quietly ended support for both Android 12 and 12L on 31st March 2025, just three and a half years after its launch alongside the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. It’s worth noting that fortunately if you’re still sporting a Pixel 6 series handset, then you can upgrade your software to the latest Android 15.

While this doesn’t mean your Android 12 device will now suddenly break down or lose all functionality, the lack of support means it will no longer be protected from bugs, security breaches and ransom infections.

Android 12 users may also miss out on new features in apps or may not even be able to access certain apps entirely. It’s worth noting however that Android 12 devices should generally continue to receive app updates via the Play Store for the time being, as many large developers will ensure their apps can still be as widely used as possible.

The easiest way to avoid any issue, keep your device protected and ensure you don’t miss out on any new features is to update your Android software version.

To find out what version you’re currently running, we’ve put together a step by step guide on how to check your software version on Android.

If your phone or tablet is running Android 12 and is more than a few years old then you may not be entitled to anymore software updates. While you needn’t worry straight away, as your phone will continue to work as normal for the time being, we would advise that you invest in a new one soon, as it will unfortunately become more vulnerable to bugs.

Our guide to the best Android phones and best cheap phones should have you covered if you’re due an upgrade.
