Cloud security company Zscaler Inc. announced today that it has acquired browser security company SquareX Ltd. for an undisclosed sum.
Founded in 2023, SquareX protects users from browser-based threats such as phishing and session hijacking with technology that focuses on securing the browser itself.
SquareX’s Browser Detection and Response technology is designed to detect and stop threats as they occur within active browser sessions. The platform monitors browser-level behavior to identify credential theft, malicious scripts, account takeover attempts and advanced phishing techniques in real time, instead of relying solely on URL reputation or network inspection.
The company delivers its protection through a lightweight browser extension that works with browsers such as Chrome and Edge, as opposed to endpoint agents or a separate corporate browser, to allow organizations to turn existing browsers into secure, enterprise-grade environments.
SquareX also offers isolated and disposable browser sessions that contain risks when users interact with suspicious links or files. The company’s technology defers to a cloud-based, temporary environment that prevents malware or data leakage from reaching the local device to reduce the impact of zero-day or unpatched threats while keeping workflows largely uninterrupted.
Zscaler says the acquisition will help it redefine browser security by allowing organizations to embed lightweight extensions into any browser to provide increased security and eliminate the need for third-party browsers.
“Enterprises have historically relied on legacy virtual private networks and and virtual desktop infrastructure, but these technologies are fundamentally flawed and laden with security risks,” said founder and Chief Executive Jay Chaudhry. “With SquareX, Zscaler is deepening our Zero Trust Exchange Platform’s capabilities in standard browsers, such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, to stop threats without having to deploy a third-party enterprise browser.”
Coming into its acquisition, SquareX had raised $26 million over two rounds, including $6 million in May 2023 and $20 million in April. Investors in the company included SYN Ventures, Peak XV Partners Management and Wipro Ltd.
The acquisition comes after Zscaler acquired AI security platform provider SpixAI Inc. in November.
