10 years late, Google Chrome finally supports 4K on Netflix

Google’s web browser now allows you to watch 4K content on Netflix. You will no longer need to use Microsoft Edge, the only compatible web browser until now, when watching Netflix content on your PC.

Google Chrome is finally catching up. Google’s web browser finally allows you to watch 4K content on Netflix. Until now, only one web browser on Windows allowed you to view 4K content available on Netflix, that of Microsoft.

Chrome is ten years behind Microsoft Edge

If Google hasn’t boasted about supporting Netflix’s 4K content with Chrome, it’s probably because its browser is ten years behind Microsoft Edge. Since 2016, Microsoft’s web browser has been the only one to offer support for UHD content from Netflix on Windows.
This support for 4K by Chrome was made official directly by Netflix which updated its dedicated support pages. On X / Twitter, a user also noticed this change.

To enjoy Netflix in 4K, a few prerequisites remain necessary. You will obviously need to have a Netflix offer including Ultra HD streaming. But you will also need, in addition to a solid internet connection, to use a PC running at least Windows 11 with the latest updates installed. In addition, your PC must have a graphics card that supports viewing 4K content.

On its support page, Netflix explains that you need at least an Nvidia GeForce 1050 or newer GPU, AMD Radeon RX 400 Series or newer, a 7th generation Intel Core processor or newer, or an AMD Ryzen processor, while making sure to install the most recent graphics drivers.

Finally, you will of course need to have a screen compatible with 4K 60 Hz, or a TV or an external 4K 60 Hz screen with an HDCP 2.2 compatible connection.
Please note, however, that 4K support for Google Chrome is only available for Windows. Users on macOS will need to continue using Safari version 14 or later to enjoy Ultra HD content on the streaming platform.
