4. Endangered: the system administrator
Outsourcing and the cloud have already significantly reduced the number of admins in the company. Experts consider the job profile of an email admin to be one of the professions that will probably soon die out completely. Email management in particular is moving to the cloud in many companies. Experts also point out that there is a world of difference between admin work in a smaller company and a comparable job in a corporation. If you want to remain viable as an admin, experts advise you to specialize in the more popular areas of IT security, for example.
5. Threatened with extinction: the certificate collector
The certificate collector lists so many certificates on his CV that you have to wonder when he actually finds time to work. The certificate alone is not enough – you have to have the relevant practical experience in order to be recommended for a position. In order to stand out from the crowd of certificate collectors, you could demonstrate your specialist knowledge, for example through specialist articles or presentations at conferences.
6. Endangered: the web designer
A few years ago there were still plenty of them, but today there are only a few web designers left. The usual HTML or Flash designer is no longer in demand – with good tools and self-learned know-how on the subject of online marketing, their expertise is hardly needed anymore.
7. Endangered: the Unix mammoth
It’s not that Unix servers won’t get the job done, an IT expert tells Dan Tynan. They are still threatened with extinction because they are being replaced by cheaper hardware. An IT consultant calculates: While you pay $25,000 for a Unix server, a Linux system with comparable functions only costs around $3,000. He advises Unix experts to protect themselves from extinction by specifically building up Linux knowledge. Valuable knowledge would be, for example, which applications can be migrated from Unix to Linux systems. If migration is imminent, this knowledge is indispensable.
8. Endangered: the code writers
Jobs in which IT specialists are only busy writing code are also at risk of extinction. Routine work in this area is often affected by outsourcing, is canceled entirely or is carried out by AI. This development also affects the writers of mobile code.
9. In danger of extinction: the technocrats
The days of the technocrats are also numbered. They can no longer build IT silos and use arguments that no one else understands. Business managers no longer ask for permission when purchasing new IT and managers question purchases and reasoning.
