One of the standard functions of a connected watch is heart rate measurement. The most efficient models are able to inform you in the event of an anomaly. Connected watches like the Apple Watch Ultra are also equipped with a body temperature sensor.
However, at present, no connected watch is capable of measuring blood sugar. Huawei has just remedied this lack with the Watch GT 6 Pro, able to assess the risk of diabetes and prediabetes.
Huawei’s Watch GT 6 Pro capable of assessing the risk of diabetes and prediabetes
Huawei is behind a major breakthrough in health at World Health Expo 2026. Its Watch GT 6 Pro connected watch, available in Europe since September 2025, is now capable of assessing the level of risk of diabetes and prediabetes using its Diabetes Risk Study tool.
The accessory uses the PPG sensor already used to measure heart rate at the wrist and blood oxygen levels. Light emitted towards the skin allows the technology to assess fluctuations in the user’s blood sugar levels. The connected watch must be worn on the wrist for a period of 3 to 14 days for the evaluation to be carried out.
The Watch GT 6 Pro then provides one of the following three risk levels: low, medium or high. The user is advised to consult a healthcare professional for further assessment and advice in cases of medium or high risk.
« China is one of the countries most affected by diabetes in the world, with more than 118 million diabetic patients, or 22% of all patients with this disease worldwide. Hyperglycemia increasingly affects younger populations, with notable differences between urban and rural areas. While urban areas have a higher prevalence rate, it is increasing rapidly in rural areas. Hyperglycemia is closely linked to cardiovascular disease, kidney disorders and other complications, posing a major challenge to public health. », Reminds Huawei.
The technology launched by the Chinese manufacturer represents an important advance in the field of connected health, even if this is not a real-time blood sugar measurement as for heart rate. Huawei is ahead of Samsung, whose next Galaxy Watch 9 could also include a solution dedicated to diabetes prevention. Rumors of similar technology on Apple Watch have also been around for a few years.
The update to assess the risk of diabetes and prediabetes on Watch GT Pro 6 should be deployed in the coming weeks.
