China’s revised mandatory national standard, the Safety Technical Specifications for Electric Bicycles, came into force on September 1, tightening safety and performance requirements for the industry. Under the new rules, plastic components must account for no more than 5.5% of the vehicle to reduce fire risks. Electric bicycles must automatically cut power when speeds exceed 25 km/h, with stricter anti-tampering measures in place. For lead-acid battery models, the maximum weight limit has been raised to 63 kilograms to improve range. A transition period allows electric bicycles manufactured before August 31 under the previous standard to be sold until November 30. From December 1, non-compliant models will be banned from sale. Authorities emphasized that consumers who already own older models will not be required to scrap them. [IThome, in Chinese]
