With the iPhone 17e behind us, all eyes are on Apple’s next big rumored innovation: a foldable smartphone. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the device will have an iPad-like interface and allow users to open apps side by side on the inner screen.

The foldable iPhone is expected to arrive later this year and feature an iPad mini-sized screen on the inside and a smaller display more reminiscent of the standard iPhone on the outside. Since the product is entering a market already dominated by rivals, including Samsung and Google, Apple is reportedly looking to stand out with its software experience.

This effort will begin with the screen ratio and app layouts, according to Gurman. While competitors use narrower aspect ratios, Apple is expected to adopt a wider ratio for the inner display. The company will also add an iPad-like sidebar for the apps and deliver proportions similar to those in the tablet’s landscape view. This will all run a modified version of iOS and allow users to open two apps side by side, Gurman notes.

The narrow screen and the visible crease were two display issues Apple found on existing foldables during development. While Samsung has been releasing foldables for seven years, Apple waited until it could fix those challenges on its product, Gurman says.

On the cameras, Apple has reportedly opted for a hole-punch cutout for the front-facing camera and two rear cameras. But while the foldable has a camera on the outside, it will only support Touch ID for authentication because the outer display panel is so thin that it doesn’t leave enough room for Apple’s Face ID sensors, according to Gurman.

The iPhone Fold, as many leakers are calling it, is expected to debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max this fall. As reported previously, Gurman says it will cost around $2,000. Leaker Instant Digital, however, reports that it will start at $2,320 for a 256GB version.
