Spotify: New desktop app creates personalized AI podcasts

Spotify has introduced Studio by Spotify Labs: a standalone desktop app that uses an AI agent to create personalized podcasts, briefings and playlists. The app, which is reminiscent of Google’s NotebookLM, is expected to appear as a preview in over 20 countries in the coming weeks.

In the Spotify blog, the company behind the streaming service writes that the studio evaluates listening habits from music, podcasts and audio books and combines them with “general world knowledge”. With the user’s consent, an integrated AI agent accesses the calendar, mailbox and notes and can independently research the web. Users can refine and adapt content in dialogue with the agent.

Audio to order

Spotify cites creating a travel briefing as an example prompt: The agent should go through the daily plan from the calendar, give restaurant recommendations near the planned stops and generate a podcast for the trip. All created content ends up in the personal Spotify library and is not publicly accessible, but is synchronized across devices. Spotify points out that the AI agent can make mistakes and output unreliable content. Music is not generated with the program.

Studio follows a command line tool that Spotify released in early May 2026 for users of AI programming tools like Claude Code, reports TechCrunch. With the desktop app, the company is opening up the same functionality to a wider audience. The format itself is not new: Google’s NotebookLM has been offering AI-generated podcasts from individually selected source texts for a long time. Adobe also offers a comparable tool in Acrobat that can transform PDF documents into podcasts.

Spotify has been building more AI functions into its ecosystem for months: Since last December, users have been able to create Spotify playlists using AI commands. The preview of Studio by Spotify Labs will be released for selected premium users aged 18 and over. How these users should be selected is unclear. Spotify did not respond to a query from heise online.
