In 2021, the catering group Yum Brands, which, in addition to Pizza Hut, includes other restaurant chains such as Taco Bell and KFC, took over the AI company Dragontail. Their AI-supported delivery and kitchen management solution is said to have since improved restaurant operations, delivery efficiency and customer satisfaction, particularly at Pizza Hut.

100 million lawsuit against Pizza Hut

But one of Pizza Hut’s largest franchisees, Chaac Pizza Northeast, apparently sees things differently. The company, which operates 111 restaurants primarily in the northeastern United States, has filed a $100 million lawsuit against Pizza Hut, Restaurant Business writes.

Editorial recommendations

The focus of the lawsuit is the mandatory introduction of the Dragontail AI solution, which is said to have led to massive problems at Chaac Pizza. Before the introduction in 2024, the company generated double-digit sales increases. However, the technology then led to losses in sales and profits and damaged the company’s value and reputation, according to the accusation.

Delivery times increase, satisfaction decreases

The use of Dragontail AI resulted in significantly longer delivery times. Specifically, the average delivery time increased from 30 to 45 minutes. This in turn ensured that in some cases the pizzas were already cold when they were delivered. Accordingly, customer satisfaction rates have fallen.

According to a report from Business Insider, fast delivery is critical to business, especially in densely populated areas like New York. Chaac also only offers pickup and delivery. Therefore, the company is heavily dependent on delivery services.

In this particular case, there are said to be problems with the delivery service DoorDash. Pizza Hut replaced an existing contract from Chaac with its own contract with the introduction of the Dragontail AI.

Chaac sees violation of franchise agreement

Chaac sees himself at a disadvantage as a result and accuses Pizza Hut of violating its franchise agreement by using the AI solution as required. Especially when it comes to Chaac’s dependence on Doordash drivers.

One problem is that the Dragontail AI shows not only the customers but also the delivery driver exactly when a pizza is ready. Some of the drivers are said to have waited longer to bundle additional deliveries.

AI tool: Drivers have precise insight

The system also displays information about tips and payment methods, such as whether payments are made in cash. This meant that the drivers preferred certain orders, but rejected others entirely.

Google’s new AI search backfires

According to Merkur, the outcome of the lawsuit is being watched with excitement across all industries. Could a judgment point the way for future legal disputes about economic damage caused by AI systems.
