Researchers warn: If AI filters out black and Asian applicants by default, innovation and diversity will fall by the wayside.

Researchers at Stanford University found significant differences in interview invitations when they analyzed four million applications submitted to 156 employers.

The situation is exacerbated by a “monoculture” in AI recruiting software: According to the study, more than 90 percent of US employers now use software to pre-select applicants. Additionally, 60 percent of Fortune 500 companies use the same system, HireVue.

Higher rejection rates for Blacks and Asians

Applicants who applied to multiple companies that use the same AI-powered selection software received rejections more often than would be statistically expected if each company’s selection process was independent of one another.
