On paper, the program is attractive, and the feedback from the first users confirms that it keeps a good part of its promises, provided you know where you are going. If this drone “like no other” tempts you, it is offered at a knockdown price for the AliExpress Summer Sales which take place from June 1 to 10.

Thanks to our exclusive promo code 01NET110, the RC2 version goes to 567 euros instead of 719 euros. Which is rather excellent for such a recent product, available for only a few months.

Other versions, including Fly More DJI Avata 360 and Avata 360 Motion Fly More Combo are eligible for the promo. But stocks are very limited. The drone is shipped from France, free of charge and in just a few days.

It comes with its official two-year warranty, and if you change your mind, you have 90 days to return it and get a refund. Finally, payment in 4 installments free of charge via PayPal allows you to spread the expense over time.

A one-of-a-kind drone

The DJI Avata 360 first surprises with its way of filming. Rather than aiming at a scene, it captures its entire environment at once. You choose the framing once you get home. In fact, it happens like this: you control without worrying about the orientation of the camera, and it is during editing that you decide on the angles, rotations and movements.

This offers unprecedented creative freedom, never seen with a classic drone, where each plan is thought out in advance. From a single flight, you shoot several sequences from different angles. The DJI Avata360 has two 1-inch sensors that film in 8K at 60 frames per second with HDR, and go up to 120 megapixels in photos.

Its large f/1.9 aperture helps it perform well in low light. However, you should keep in mind that this 8K definition is spread over a complete sphere, so that the final image is a little less sharp than with a classic single-lens drone. A single lens mode in 4K at 60 frames per second is also provided for filming forward, as with a traditional Avata.

In flight, the O4+ transmission remains stable and reliable even at a good distance, the integrated propeller protections will reassure beginners, and the piloting is nervous and responsive. The fact remains that this drone imposes constraints that it is better to know before giving in.

The first is autonomy. DJI announces 23 minutes, but in 8K 360 degree capture, with a little wind, count on around 15 minutes that can actually be used. With only one battery in the basic pack, it quickly gets frustrating. We therefore advise you to plan several. The second is regulation. With its approximately 455 grams, it far exceeds the threshold of 250 grams, which requires in France to register on the AlphaTango platform and follow online training before flying.

This is not a device that you unpack and fly everywhere in one go. Finally, the third constraint, and not the least, concerns the assembly. Filming in 360 degrees generates huge files, of the order of a gigabyte per minute, which must be processed with the in-house DJI Studio software on a powerful computer. The 42 gigabytes of internal memory are filling up rapidly, so a fast microSD card becomes essential.

Add a rather noisy, non-waterproof and non-foldable device, therefore cumbersome to carry without a good case, and you see the picture. To its credit, its exposed lenses can be replaced without going through the after-sales service, which avoids costly repairs in the event of a scratch. Clearly, the Avata 360 is not the drone that we put in everyone’s hands, despite its apparent simplicity.

For a first purchase, the mass of options, the rules to follow and especially the assembly time can quickly discourage you. But for a content creator or enthusiast willing to put in the work, it’s a machine that opens up shots that are almost impossible to get with a traditional drone.

DJI Avata 360, which version to choose?

As we told you previously, the Avata 360 is available in three versions, which are mainly distinguished by the way of piloting and the accessories provided. It’s best to understand the difference before ordering, because it changes the experience completely.

The standard version, called Avata 360 (DJI RC 2), is the most accessible. It brings together the drone, the DJI RC 2 radio control with its integrated 5.5-inch touch screen, a battery, propeller guards, spare propellers, a screwdriver, a foldable take-off mat and a USB-C cable. With it, you pilot by looking at the controller screen, like with a traditional drone. This is enough to get started, but with a single battery, you will quickly be limited to a fairly short flight per outing.

The Fly More version (DJI RC 2) uses exactly the same screen controller, but adds what is missing to fly peacefully, namely three batteries in total, a charging station and a shoulder carrying bag. This is the most logical choice if you plan to fly regularly without spending your time on the charger, while keeping the control on the screen.

The Motion Fly More version completely changes approach. Exit the screen controller, make way for the DJI Goggles N3 headset and the RC Motion 3 gesture control, also accompanied by three batteries, a charging station and a bag. Here, you see through the headset what the drone is filming, in an immersive first-person view, and you control it with one hand, using gestures. It’s the most spectacular FPV experience, but also the most difficult to handle, and you have to be willing to do without the RC 2’s screen.

To put it simply, go for the standard version to discover at a lower cost, for the Fly More if you want the same thing with enough to chain flights, and for the Motion Fly More if it’s the total immersion with the headset that attracts you. In the first two cases, you remain on screen. In the last one, you dive into the immersive FPV.
