The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the seizure of nearly 400 websites. These platforms broadcast FIFA World Cup matches without authorization. The operation was called Operation Offsides.
How big is this operation?
This seizure is the result of international coordination carried out via the ICHIP (International Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property) network. Servers and domains have been targeted in Peru and Bulgariatwo known hubs for this type of online piracy, but also in Croatia, Romania, Poland and Colombia.
The operation benefited from the help of FIFA itself, as well as groups like beIN Media, NBC Universal and the ACE association (Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment).
” Unauthorized broadcast of World Cup matches violates intellectual property rights and fuels criminal organizations “, indicates the DOJ in a press release.
Sites that would be dangerous for users
Authorities insist that the risk goes beyond just the issue of copyright, in addition to generating illicit revenue for cybercriminal networks.
With the sites concerned, it is highlighted a exposure to threatsincluding malware attacks and insecure connections. Personal and financial data may be compromised.
As always, the authorities replaced the seized sites with a banner informing visitors of the action in progress. Remember that the United States is one of the host countries of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
