Amazon is reportedly “in talks” to acquire Globalstar, the company that connects Apple’s iPhone and Apple Watch satellite features. Apple’s 20% stake in the company is a key factor in negotiations.

Amazon could own company that powers Emergency SOS via satellite feature

The Financial Times reports that Amazon is interested in buying Globalstar, and Apple’s ownership stake is a complicating factor.

One complicating factor has been Apple’s ownership of a 20 per cent stake in Globalstar, necessitating negotiations between Amazon and Apple, the people said.

Apple took a 20% stake in Globalstar in November 2024, which was worth around $400 million at the time.

Apple also committed to $1.1 billion in “upfront infrastructure prepayments” to help build out Globalstar’s satellite network as part of the deal.

Globalstar’s valuation has astronomically increased since Apple’s stake, potentially valuing Apple’s gains at around $1.1 billion — the same amount it pre-paid for service in 2024.

Apple currently supports Emergency SOS via satellite on iPhone 14 or later, and Apple Watch Ultra 3.

The service allows iPhone and Apple Watch users to access emergency services when cellular connectivity is unavailable.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s interest centers around the company’s plans to compete with SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service.

Amazon is building out Amazon Leo, previously called Project Kuiper, as its own satellite internet service.
