Among the coolest unique iOS features is NameDrop, which arrived with iOS 17. Instead of exchanging business cards in a physical meeting, users can exchange contact by putting two iPhones side by side. And the good news is that Google finally seems to want to offer a similar functionality on its Android platform. The Android Authority site has been discussing clues indicating that the new feature is in development for a while now. And, recently, it managed to activate the functionality interface on Android, even if it is not yet officially released.

Thanks to this discovery, we have new information on the operation of this functionality, which would be called “tap to share”. In essence, by touching two devices together, users would have the ability to instantly share contact information, but also photos, videos, links, etc. For sharing to be possible, both smartphones should be unlocked. And users should then overlap the tops of both phones, with the screen facing upwards. Then, you would have to wait for a visual signal before separating the two devices.

An imminent launch?

For the moment, caution remains in order, before the official launch of this feature. However, the fact that an interface could be unlocked by Android Authority suggests that this launch could be imminent. As noted by our colleagues at Android Authority, it is, for example, possible that Google will integrate this new feature into the upcoming Android 17 update. As a reminder, since last year, Google has adopted a new schedule for releasing new versions of its operating system. As a result, Android 17 is planned for this second quarter of 2026, whereas previously, major OS updates only arrived in the second half.

But it is also possible that the Tap to Share functionality will be made official during a Pixel Drop (a launch of new features for Google Pixel smartphones) or during an Android “feature drop” (new features for Android that Google launches outside of major updates). In any case, the feature should be appreciated by Android users, especially those who regularly go to events and conferences to network and expand their address books. On the other hand, this feature would be even more useful if it could be compatible with the iPhone (as a reminder, Google has already launched compatibility between the Android file sharing system and AirDrop).
